OTOH I think we can focus too much on "optimal" when talking theory. I wish it weren't so, because I love flying versatile stuff with as big an engagement profile as possible, but if all you care about is winning then focusing narrowly on one thing and avoiding counters would definitely be the "optimal" choice. This is related but a bit more of a general seems to me that the best strategy in eve is to specialise, ie: focus on maximizing your strengths, rather than trying to compensate for your weaknesses. Perhaps with snakes it might be a worthwhile tradeoff but surely not without. But the slicer has even more extreme speed and agility, they were very competent pilots.and tbh I'm still unsure about the idea even then. That said, I have seen a couple of people putting a plate on kiting slicers as mitigation against all the projected damage that exists these days. Again, the ADC seems to me like a much better choice. Even on an antikiting mwd/scram brawler you really can't afford to give up any of your speed if you want to catch the things you're chasing. You're right though - a glance on zkillboard does show quite a few plated and trimarked "kiting" wolfs. Gives you that crucial bit of breathing room for a quick GTFO without compromising the real lifeline: speed and agility. I haven't tried it, so idk what you give up in damage and range, but that seems a much better option than a plate and/or trimarks to me. If you want a bit more tank I see people downgrading to the smaller 250 arty to squeeze in an ADC. Yeah the cookie cutter kiting arty wolf is just AAR, nanos and gyro/TE. It's good practice for fighting t2 cruisers and up where resists become even more important as tank scales and fights go on longer. Just another variable to take into account and learn. Likewise for an enyo shooting kin/therm-locked hybrids VS the hawk. For example the Retribution, while generally considered the best kiting AF, is disadvantaged 1v1 against a wolf because it uses lasers and is forced to shoot em/thermal damage into those naturally high em/therm resists. But that changes with AFs because some of their damage types make for semi-hard counter situations. When learning to pewpew in FW space, before I started flying and engaging assault frigs, I got used to the general rule of shooting explosive at armour tanks, EM at shield tanks and kin/therm when not sure. The other big thing you have to consider with AF matchups is the natural T2 resists - something that doesn't matter much with T1 and faction frigates. But IMO it's really the sweet mwd sig radius reduction, plus the combination of speed and projection on the retri, wolf and hawk, that make assault frigs shine as solo boats. I know its weapons can project out to scram range but I would never try to brawl against an afterburning brawler AF in one (the exact same points apply to the two-mid retri also).Īll the other hulls are totally viable as tanky brawling ships - in fact it's probably what most people think of when they see one. Midslots certainly are important, as you mentioned, and because of that the wolf only really works for me as either a pure kiter or an anti-kiting (mwd/scram/ACs) ship. Of course it still works as tanky fast tackle for a gang (although the harpy/vengeance can be nearly as good/better and people aren't so hyper-aware of their threat as they are with a jag) but as a solo PvP ship the meh dps lets it down a bit. I agree with key_mousse said below: the Jaguar is actually a bit weak nowadays relative to the others as a general combat ship (excepting the underpowered ishkur). For general roaming they usually just do one thing very well (either a big active tank, pure gank dps or kiting). But only if you know what you're fighting. You're right - assault frigs can actually do some surprising rock/paper/scissors surprise in 1v1s with unusual midslot choices (or even weird tank or speed in the lows and rigs).
